Sounding Off on Deep Listening with Composer Annie Nikunen

ListenUpNYC talks to this brilliant young lady about her inspiration and audience

Annie Nikunen is a notable American flautist, composer, choreographer and dancer. I sat down with her recently to discuss the inspiration behind her composition of and performance in The Sound of Space Between Us with The Black Box Ensemble.

Annie and I discuss the performance of the uber-compelling piece at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn last month, which I was lucky enough to see, and her performance of the piece at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass.

As I'd sat listening, watching, it seemed to me a perfect example of deep listening, of how thrilling and also how potentially scary it can be to take in a work of art and let it truly and deeply impact you.

I ask Annie about her audience, if because of the intensity of the work people need to be somehow trained, or in the know. You'll hear my reaction as she offers up the perfect answer: "I think they just need to be open," she suggests.

Aaaah. I say it to her, and repeat it now. Aaaah, YES! Deep listening requires us to be open, which isn't always easy but is pretty much always worthwhile.

So, Listen Up NYC (and beyond) and please be open to the fascinating Annie Nikunen. Enjoy the podcast and follow Annie at www.annienikunen.com to find out about her upcoming performances. She is a must-see, must-hear!
