This moving away from comfort and security, this stepping out into what’s unknown, uncharted, shaky, that’s called liberation.

I have decided to take a journey, a solo cross-country trek to find harmony where I can, especially inside of myself. In lieux of my usual calendar of events in and around the city, I will be posting and podcasting about my travels and what I find. I aim to seek out music venues and sound healers and places and people that offer up a welcoming vibe to a stranger from another land.
I started my journey on Friday with a return to Ananda Ashram for their beautiful Maha Shivaratri All-Night Musical Celebration. To be honest, I only lasted until 1:30 am, contemplating my drive ahead, but it was beautiful. The Classical Indian traditions of music and dance are transportive for the mind and body. The ancient instruments themselves a revelation in what sound can evoke.
A huge thank you to Deepak Kumar and all of the beautiful participants in the celebration. The mothers and children performing together these ancient rituals was particularly moving, contemplating the training and attention paid to develop these traditional skills. “We are all students, bonded in a beautiful evening…” it was said. And it was so.

In the morning, after a few hours sleep, I awoke to a ladybug on my pillow. I looked up the symbolism and found they are associated with good luck and positivity. They are said mean good fortune and change, along with spiritual guidance, abundance and protection, all in their little shell. I’ll take it.
I searched for a cafe and choose the Village Hands Cafe. The parking lot was packed and I met a man on my way in who reassured me it wouldn’t be crowded, it was just that every single person drives in Monroe, NY. He was wrong, it was packed but we began to chat. This was his stomping ground, he was clearly the chatty sort, and he introduced me to all of the staff, bought my croissant egg sandwich and Americano and invited me breakfast with he and a lovely friend of his. Phil (left), my benefactor, and his friend Stewart paved the way nicely for my journey and my expectation that kindness can always be found among strangers.
A sound bath for a friend back in Brooklyn, for her birthday, and I am off to Pittsburgh. I have a jazz venue in mind for tonight, God willing. Looking forward!!
There are lots of good shows happening around NYC I know…seek them out, and go! Find friendly strangers. They are always around. Will be in touch!!
